Criss Barsony lampe gras and her boyfriend Razvan were working full-time in Cluj-Napoca lampe gras when they decided to pack up their bags in search of adventure. lampe gras They had only one plan in mind: to head west. On a shoestring budget, the odds were stacked against them, but when they discovered the work exchange website HelpX , the pieces of the puzzle were set in place.
So they headed out, first to France and then down to Spain, spending a few months in each place until one day they came across lampe gras an English woman running a ceramics workshop in Spain. ‘Actually it was my boyfriend’s idea as he is trained in ceramics. She told us that she was booked up already, but we begged her to let us stay just a week.’
‘At first I just started playing around with little bits of clay in her workshop. I had everything at my disposal; the glazes, the tools, the kiln. It’s very interesting; nobody forced me to do anything, it all came from me. For me it was the perfect formula.’ Criss was left to experiment freely until a visitor saw Criss’ delicate lampe gras creations and suggested lampe gras her style was better suited to porcelain. ‘She invited me to try it out in her nearby workshop, and asked me if I wanted to sell my creations there. Of course, I said yes! I think what kept me experimenting through that early period was their wonderful feedback. They were so encouraging and it was the engine that kept me going.’
When they returned to Cluj-Napoca full of ideas and energy from their trip, the realities of being back hit home. Without access to a fully stocked ceramics workshop, Criss could have stopped there. But she didn’t. Instead she tracked down a single old man who produced liquid porcelain and befriended ceramics students who were studying at the University of Fine Arts. ‘I asked them endless questions about everything, and they were very pleased to help. In a way it was the best way to learn. They filtered their knowledge through to me, teaching me only what I needed. Occasionally I would hit a wall, I would be making things to complicated because of a lack of knowledge. But they would show me a simple method or technique and I would make another leap forward.’

She says ‘I see the white of the porcelain like a blank page waiting to be drawn on. Certain colours appeal to me but I am not sure why. I am fond of muted greens and greys.’ When you look at Criss’ work you would think that she has years of professional training, lampe gras but she works instinctively and naturally, from the illustrated characters that come from her imagination to the form and colours that have appealed to her from the her first experiments.
Criss tells me that she has considered taking a course of some kind as she feels she has much more to learn. lampe gras My friends say it isn t necessary to get a degree, that I already have my own unique style. I can’t see a distinct style in my work. I always feel a sense that there is something more I could be doing, that I haven’t quite reached the best that I can be. It would be a dream for me to work with under a master lampe gras ceramicist.’ She is currently working on a collection to submit to a fair in Bucharest in the Autumn. ‘It is the first time I worked in terms of a ‘collection’. Each bold step on her journey, from abandoning the safety of full-time work to persevering on her return to Romania required a vision, a belief that she could succeed. Objects with masses (<0.08 theater lights solar masses) too small to sustain hydrogen fusion were theorized theater lights to exist five decades ago, and discovered 30 years later, due to their extreme faintness. Dr. Mary Barsony is a Principal Investigator at the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Universe at the SETI Institute and Adjunct Professor of Physics and Astronomy at San Francisco State University. She has served as a faculty member at USC, Harvey Mudd College, and U.C. Riverside. She earned her Ph.D. in physics from Caltech, and her S.B. in physics from MIT.
Through submillimeter observations in the early ’90’s, Dr. Barsony discovered the first true protostar–an object surrounded by infalling gas in the process of accumulating theater lights the mass it will have as a full-fledged star. This is how the article written by Ágnes Daróczi begins. Katalin Bársony is the youngest member of that generation. She was raised at the frontier of two different cultures: the old traditional community of the small village the Daróczi s lived in and their intellectual environment from Budapest. Katalin Bársony: I was growing up between two cultures and two languages: my mother and my grandmother talked to me only in Romanes glamox lighting for a long time. For me, the village and the urban traditions of my family were always in complete harmony. Before my grandparents moved to Pest, I spent a lot of time in Bedő, I was usually there during the summers. In Pest, it was different: here I had to meet my family s strict requirements. My great-aunt, my mother s sisters, all of them had aspired to get a diploma. Bársony Katalin: It is real, but in a different way. The relatives of my father moved to America when I was three years old. I missed them very much, we met very rarely and this has not changed until today. My impression was that my Jewish friends glamox lighting did not have a stronger Jewish identity than mine. My life is utterly determined by the Roma culture but in spite of this I am also a Jewish woman, I live in Budapest and I have many other identities too. I belong to a new generation that possesses complex identities, and values glamox lighting cultural diversity and the harmony of living together in these diverse communities.

My great grandma had no other choice than to promise him that she will give her consent for the marriage.
Katalin Bársony: My family always avoided these isolating conflicts. As far as I am concerned, I am familiarized with the issue now, as I am working on a film about a Romungro jazz violinist, József Balázs. Through his band, he connects the Romungro Gypsy music with the Oláhs Gipsy music. In this way, he attempts to bridge differences.
Barnabás Kelemen: We did not experience any tensions from these differences. I must warn you, it’s a dangerous post, as I’m sure by the end you’ll want to begin collecting them too! It’s definitely not for those on a budget. These lamps can be seen priced in the thousands of dollars! So if you have one gathering dust in your garage, dig it out and start to appreciate their beauty, because that’s what these ladies are. Beautiful!
Though these were mass produced, they were then sold as cheap and kitsch, but oh how times have changed. Due to their once cheapness, many have been turfed making those left, highly collectable. They have now become recognised beautiful oligo dx examples of mid century design.
Barsony didn’t just produce matte black ceramics. They also produced a range of White ceramics which are considerably less common than the iconic black pieces. They are often found with a sticker called ‘Silver Cloud’ or Venice’
My Ballerina lamp shown above, stamped FL-49, is also made in the matte black glaze, and one of the more common shapes. However it’s unusual to find one in the lustre white and pink glaze, so I treasure it dearly!
The other piece is one that I’m sure most people wouldn’t believe if I told them was also a Barsony Silver Cloud lamp. It’s a great example of pieces that they made that weren’t strictly black ladies.
If you are searching online for an authentic Barsony lamp BEWARE!! Do your research before buying. The name Barsony oligo dx has become a name that is now associated and used when any vintage black ceramic is being sold, even if it’s not actually made by Barsony.
An example below often pops up on eBay listed as Barsony when they are in fact Japanese pieces. Kalmar pieces are another name that is commonly mistaken with Barsony. oligo dx You can tell the difference by their more pointy and angular features. Barsony ladies oligo dx are more rounded and smooth.
Most Barsony pieces are stamped oligo dx underneath or to the back with their model number for example, F, FL, GL, H, HL, L, U, T, V, followed by a number. Once you start to familiarise yourself with these markings, you’ll notice that they represent the type of piece it is, for example L stands for lamp, HL stands for head lamp, V for vase etc.
But again beware, because oligo dx yep, there are reproductions floating about of the original Barsony pieces, and they have tricked many people. Once you have put both next to each other though, you will be able to tell the difference.
On the reproductions, oligo dx The model number to the base is often more rough, jaggedy and messy than the originals, also the paintwork will be have less detail than normal. Jean Barsony used to sit at the kitchen table of an evening, hand painting each piece and hand making the shades, so the fakes have a lot less love put into them. Old electricals can also help you determine the new from the old, however don’t rely on it. It’s not a difficult job to add old electrical fittings to a new lamp.
The biggest giveaway is if you find one that’s at a weird medium price of $100-ish and no one’s bought it yet, you can begin questioning it’s authenticity right then. These pieces are so iconic and so well known, the chances of finding a piece at a price like that is rare. Not impossible, but rare. If someone thinks it’s oligo dx junk, it would probably be priced a lot cheaper! Either the seller knows what it is or they don’t. So anything at that middle range weird price is questionable. It could either mean it’s damaged, or a reproduction so really check it out. If you have a smart phone, perhaps google the model number underneath to see if anyone’s posted in a forum about it!
In Barsony lamps cases, lookout for missing earrings, paint wear, restoration, breaks/chips/cracks, whether oligo dx it has it’s original shade, oligo dx whether the model number is uncommon, and even how detailed the painting is!
Two of the same model numbers can have different oligo dx artwork to each other. The starburst pattern seems to be more popular than others and can fetch a higher price than the same piece with a more standard design.
So if you’re wanting to have a Barsony piece in your home, you may want to start with a ballerina! They are so beautiful and still affordable. You can pickup a Ballerina lamp depending on the above pointers, for anywhere from $150-$400.
