Cast: Abhay Deol (TA Krishnan), Emraan Hashmi (Joginder Parmar), Kalki Koechlin (Shalini Sahay), Prosenjit Chatterjee (Dr. Ahmadi), Pitobash Tripathy (Bhagu), Farooq urban lighting Sheikh (Kaul), Tillotama urban lighting Shome (Mrs. Ahmedi.) .
After seeing Shanghai understood why he did not do so well at the box office, is a reflection film with elements that perhaps are not much appreciated by the public. The effort by tseries (producer) trying to attract people to see the film, promos suggest things ever seen in the film as a romance between two protagonists note and still only two musical numbers that serve more than critical which entertainment. I feel that the producers to see the success of the previous two works Emraan Hashmi, The Dirty Picture and Jannat 2 believed that this was going to be equal and premiered in many cinemas and ultimately failed; they should realizing that this movie is not mass and throw in big cities and especially in international festivals as well it might have been more widely accepted. Anyway Shanghai is a remarkable film, best I've seen this year.
A city is divided between two camps: the current government and the opposition led by Dr. Ahmadi (Prosenjit Chatterjee). In the midst of one of his speeches he is killed and three people urban lighting are involved in his death, his mistress, a person who filmed the event and an official in charge of investigating the facts.
Shanghai is based on the book Z Greek writer Vassilis Vassilikos urban lighting and French film of the same name in 1969, the director Dibakar Banerjee has adapted the story to the social political situation in India very well and only retains a character in the novel and the original film. Banerjee plays with several interesting issues having to do with progress and infrastructure of a city: to what extent can benefit the people? how necessary it is to move forward? has to be done regardless harm most and few are the beneficiaries? although a backward city can not prosper ever. Banerjee also exposes the manipulation of the leaders with the people, the power of money and more superficial urban lighting issues such as the obsession of Indians with foreign women with fair skin, and show how key political campaigns.
The three protagonists are not something you see very often in Hindi cinema, they are ordinary people with equal number of strengths and weaknesses, at any time decide to do heroics but move on their own personal reasons, some quite selfish. Here none is interested in doing the right thing for others but for themselves, but that does not mean the end goodness does not appear and try to correct their mistakes.
In proceedings Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Emraan Hashmi are amazing, but excels the latter because it is out of your comfort zone, it is more common to see Abhay and Kalki in this type of film, Emraan makes a totally different role to what he usually goes triumphantly.
The film has only two musical numbers and as I said earlier are social criticism, best of all is the item number Imported Kamariya with British model Scarlett Mellish Wilson is not the typical urban lighting item but a brutal critique of the system and Bollywood. Plus she has a tiny character who is tops, leaves two minutes but has a big impact.
