Study of insects shows that street lighting affects ecosystem
City lights have an unexpectedly strong effect on insect populations, favoring some species and harming others, according to a study that raises new questions about the human impact on wildlife.
Scientists led by Thomas Davies of the University of Exeter, southwest England, spent three days in August 2011 by installing insect traps in the vicinity of Helston, a small town in Cornwall.
Five species, including ants, ground beetles and bugs-believe, were much more abundant invue in lighted areas compared to areas located between points of light. City Lights also attracted more predatory insects and ghouls.
"Urban lighting changes the environment at higher levels of biological organization than we knew before, revealing the potential of being able to change the structure and function of ecosystems," says the study.

Each year they select are ten winning proposals, which are elected by public moltoluce vote through the website of ArtPrize. In 2012, the winning proposal was "Elephants", the designer Adonna Khare, where intertwined life-size drawings of elephants in a wall distributed as triptych. In fifth place is the urban intervention "Lights in the Night: Where Hope raises the flight". Artists Mark Carpenter and Dan Johnson. moltoluce His proposal was to group hundreds of volunteers moltoluce in the streets of Grand Rapids to launch glowglobes with a printed moltoluce desire, those who were sent to the official site of "Lights in the Night".
ArtPrize is an American competition that annually convenes dozens of artists, collectives and critics to postulate and assess urban interventions and places of Michigan where can develop artistic activities open to all residents.
For artists, the event was designed as a "launch dreams and hopes of the whole community." The event took place on 28 September and attracted more than 5,000 people, which is coordinated through social networks to meet the launch sites in the city of Grand Rapids.
"Lights in the Night" is the first massive event in ArtPrize story. In fact, it was so crowded that the organizers estimate that more than 15,000 flying torches adorned the city skies between Bridge Street and Pearl Street streets.
This activity was made possible thanks to the interest and spontaneous citizen participation of many thousand people who, for one night and through the lights, tried to unify and take ownership of the public spaces of the west aldo of Grand Rapids.

Hidden in the roof of a building in Brooklyn vita lite and equipped with an infrared camera with a wide-angle lens, it lurks the windows of thousands of buildings across the East River. The camera detects 800 gradations of light sensitivity that allows your software vita lite to determine the time that families turn on the lights, what kind of lamp use and pollutants to which their buildings emit.
Koonin, once Undersecretary of Government Science and Obama now heads the Urban Science and Progress Center of New York University, vita lite is at the forefront of an academic movement to quantify urban life.
Technology companies vita lite have used techniques and technologies collectively known as "big vita lite data" - the collection and analysis of large volumes of data - to make business decisions and format the customer experience. Now, researchers are bringing the "big data" into the public sphere, in order to improve the quality of life, save money and understand the cities in a way that was not possible a few years.
By doing this, researchers are raising questions about the balance between vita lite privacy and efficiency. Municipal sensor networks bring great opportunities, but also risks. By transforming personal habits into digital data, technology can instigate the authorities to use this data improperly. Although scholars seek to protect privacy and promote transparency, some fear that the benefits of big data can be lost if the monitoring bother the public.
"For vita lite too long, people living in cities pretended they could be anonymous," says Anthony Townsend, author of "Smart vita lite cities: vita lite big data, civic hackers, and the quest for a new utopia" (something like "Smart Cities: big data , civic hackers and the search for a new utopia, "unedited in Brazil). "It's not a question of anonymity, but surveillance. There is a real prediction that it will happen. "
The center of New York University, which receives millions of dollars in funds from several companies, including Microsoft Corp. and International vita lite Business Machines vita lite Corp. In addition to the own City of New York, is one of the few new academic institutions developing municipal projects vita lite of big data.
In the coming weeks, the University of Chicago will install dozens of sets of sensors on the lights that illuminate the financial district and elsewhere. Each set, the size of a large laptop, contains 65 sensors vita lite that collect data on environmental conditions, including loudness, wind and carbon vita lite dioxide levels, and also behavioral data such as pedestrian flow through smartphones with Wi-Fi .
"It's like a [biometric sensor] Fitbit to the city," says Charlie Catlett, director of the Computer Center of Urban and Data at the University of Chicago, the institute vita lite who is heading the project, called "Order of Things."
These projects stem from recent public initiatives to make the most efficient cities through the use of data. In Houston, for example, authorities monitor smartphones to identify bottlenecks and synchronize traffic lights. Sensors vita lite in Barcelona trash cans help the garbage vita lite collectors to optimize their routes.
These projects are in early stages, but already creating controversy. "This type of invasion is a very slippery slope," says Bob Fioretti, councilor and candidate vita lite for mayor of Chicago, on the ongoing project in the city. He says the country "reached a point where technology has gone beyond the parameters vita lite of the law."
The US Attorney General vita lite Eric Holder, recently highlighted the dangers of "preventive policing". Police in Los Angeles and Chicago are using historical crime data, another example vita lite of data collection, to predict where crimes will happen, a strategy that leads police to knock on doors and alert residents to remain within the law, before they commit some crime. vita lite
Some cities, such as Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles, have adopted policies that make municipal data available to the public. Sensor networks of companies and government tend to operate under few laws and reviews. Earlier this month, the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications of New York City interrupted a project in which a company had installed hundreds of sensors in public telephone booths. The sensors surreptitiously conveyed marketing messages.
The goal is not to sell products or spy on people, say academics, but to improve the quality vita lite of life and the knowledge base about how funcion cities

The NASA satellite was doing this research and to compile results for three days and, according to

Christmas lights visible from the NASA space satellites tivoli lighting have increased the intensity of light in urban areas, especially in the suburbs - and regardless of communities and religious practices.
Street lights, bright cribs, flashing trees. The fame of Christmas lights passes the Earth so that you can see it from space. A NASA satellite found that there are cities that are 20-30% brighter during Christmas, not counting the suburbs tivoli lighting where the values reach 50%.
Miguel Roman, NASA researcher explains that the United States "there is an almost ubiquitous signal. We realize that we are increasingly living Christmas in various communities. These light patterns tivoli lighting show a shared Christmas tradition tivoli lighting ", beyond the different traditions tivoli lighting and religions. tivoli lighting
Cities like Washington, Baltimore, Richmond and Virginia Beach are represented with yellow dots on maps NASA, an increase tivoli lighting in energy, but insignificant. That portion of the suburbs on the map appears tivoli lighting in green, for checking if a further increase of light intensity.
"In all, we see a smaller increase of light in denser tivoli lighting urban centers compared with the suburbs of small land - where there are more family dwellings" replied Eleanor Srokes, researcher at NASA, the Huffington Post.
The NASA satellite was doing this research and to compile results for three days and, according to the researchers, even in Cairo there is more light at Christmas than during Ramadan. But Miguel Roman gets a warning: we must rethink the way we live in society:

If you look at the Earth from space, it will be clear that there is intelligent life here for the immense amount of light concentrated in different parts of the planet. Now Abraham Loeb of Harvard University, and Edwin Turner of Princeton University, say in a study that we can find other civilizations showxpress in the same way. The reason for this shift in perception happened because the way the current search, using radio waves, has not proven as effective This mainly because, contrary to popular belief, TV broadcasts do not travel that far. Moreover, as our civilization advances in the way of communication through optical fiber, less energy waste is generated. Thus, other hypothetical civilizations may have done the same, which would hinder our searches. Research by Loeb and Turner shows that artificial lights in remote worlds showxpress can be identified by the latest generation of telescopes. The basic premise is simple: planets that are exclusively lit by a sun have a "light labeled" different orbs that have artificial lighting. Loeb and Turner also stated that the use of this technique, in communion with long range telescopes, become able to identify a large city on Earth even standing on the edge of our solar system. With the advancement of telescopes, showxpress this range should showxpress be even greater. Of course this technique to give immediate results, aliens showxpress must be at a distance of up to 50 astronomical units (AU) - something like from here to the dwarf planet Pluto. Of course this is unlikely, but the advancement of technology already allows us to see farther and farther into space.
