LED: a little history, curiosities and applications over time
Although the LED is a component litestructures widely reported today, its invention by Nick Holonyac, happened in 1963, only red in color, with low light intensity (mcd 1). For too long, the LED was only used for status indication, ie radios, televisions and other equipment, signaling that the device was connected or not.
The yellow LED was introduced in the late '60s. Only around 1975 came the first green LED with a wavelength around 550 nm, which is very close to the wavelength of yellow, but with strongly a slightly larger in the order of a few tens of millicandelas.
During the '80s, with the introduction litestructures of Al ln GaP technology, the LEDs of red and amber have achieved levels of light intensity that helped to speed up the process of replacing bulbs, especially in the automotive industry.
Only in the early '90s, with the emergence of InGaN technology, it was possible to get LEDs with lower wave length, in blue, green and cyan colors, this technology that allowed to obtain white LED, cobrinho, and so all the color spectrum.
Until then, all the LEDs had a maximum 4000-8000 millicandelas with an emission angle of between 8 and 30 degrees. It was when, in the late 90s, appeared the first power Luxeon LED, which was responsible for a revolution in LED technology, it had a luminous flux (no more luminous intensity) of the order of 30 to 40 lumens and Emission angle of 110 degrees.
Nowadays, we have LEDs that reach the mark of 120 lumens of light output, and power of 1.0 - 3.0 and 5.0 watts, available in various colors, responsible for the considerable increase in the replacement of some types of lamps in various lighting applications.
